Valley of the Dolls
The highly successful and award-winning Dionne Warwick was actually not originally intended for the role of singing 1967's '(Theme of) Valley of the Dolls', the title track for the soundtrack of the film of the same name. Andre Previn and Dory Previn, who are credited with writing the song, initially intended for it to be performed vocally by Judy Garland before she was fired from the film for irrelevant reason, and in a scramble to find a new vocalist for the tune they were recommended Dionne Warwick by one of the film’s stars, Barbara Parkins. The song would come to perform impressively on the charts, peaking at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks in the spring of 1968, #2 on the Cash Box, and #1 on the Record World charts. The same LP that bears '(Theme of) Valley of the Dolls' would also birth her first Grammy Award Winner, 'Do You Know the Way to San Jose'. Despite Warwick not particularly liking the song, in time it would come to be a staple in her music as one of the signature tracks in her career.  (Song Bios Copyright © 2016 J♯)
