Bobby "Boris" Pickett rocked the Halloween season and produced an instant novelty classic when he released
'Monster Mash' in the fall of 1962. Written from the perspective of a mad scientist and a narrative mimicking the
ghoulish voice of Bela Lugosi's Dracula, the track drew from both the dark holiday's rising popularity in popular culture
and the 'Mashed Potato' dance craze of the era. 'Monster Mash' was praised nationally in its season in 1962, reaching number 1
on the Billboard Hot 100 for the week just before Halloween. The song has been re-released and covered multiple times since its original
issue, returning to the Hot 100 three more times. The catchy tune has been translated over into Christmas editions of the song, and even rewritten for political intention.
