Hall and Oates are an American music duo from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania comprised of Daryl Hall and John Oates. The two musicians met whilst fronting their own musical groups at a band competition in 1967. They became friends and spent more and more time together, eventually rooming in several apartments throughout Philadelphia. The duo's name is based on a mailbox at one of their apartments that read 'Hall and Oates', an obvious and fitting title. After signing with Atlantic Records, Hall and Oates released a pattern of unimpressive albums, the most notable being 'Abandoned Luncheonette', which managed to peak at 33 on the charts and keep a spot for 38 weeks. The two would leave Atlantic in 1975 and find their first major success with the album 'Daryl Hall & John Oates' featuring the top 5 hit 'Sara Smile'.
A re-release of their Atlantic Records track 'She's Gone' managed to peak at number 7 on the charts, and the second single from their second, more pop-driven RCA album 'Bigger Than Both of US' titled 'Rich Girl' was a number one smash, but the rest of the 1970s and early 1980s proved a rough period for the musicians. Disco music took the marketable spotlight away from releases such as 'Beauty on a Back Street' and 'Along the Red Ledge', and Hall and Oats wouldn't see mass appeal again until their celebrated 1981 album 'Private Eyes'.
This, along with the synth-coated 'H20' that followed, became their most successful albums and held 5 top 10 hits; This included 'Maneater', the biggest track of the duo's career. Through the next 20 years the group would release several more albums and sign to Arista Records, steadily keeping a quiet spot among modern music.
