Earth, Wind & Fire is an American music group that originated in Chicago, Illinois. The group cannot be confined to one specific genre, as their sound consists of a variety of R&B, soul, funk, jazz, disco, pop, rock, Latin, and African. The band came to be from the aftermath of a former group named The Salty Peppers in 1971 and experienced an array of lineup changes, musicians at times including Philip Bailey, Verdine White, Ralph Johnson, Larry Dunn, Al McKay, and Andrew Woolfolk. During its near 40 years since inception, the group has earned 20 Grammy nominations, winning 6 collectively with two members (Maurice White and Philip Bailey) winning individual awards. They have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Vocal Group Hall of Fame, and also have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Earth, Wind, & Fire have sold over 100 million records, placing them amongst the world's top-selling bands of all time. Rolling Stone Magazine describes the group as "innovative, precise yet sensual, calculated yet galvanizing" and contributed 'changing the sound of black pop' forever to the band. This innovation and originality can be witnessed through their dynamic sound and elaborate performances: Notable signature affects include the contrast between Maurice White's tenor and Philip Bailey's falsetto, and the bands use of unorthodox or foreign-to-the-mainstream instruments such as the Kalema. Earth, Wind & Fire are known to be the first African-American act to have sold out Madison Square Garden and receive the MSG Gold Ticket award, and were invited to perform at the White House during President Obama's first social event of his new administration. On February 4, 2016, founding member and lead vocalist Maurice White passed away after suffering from Parkinson's disease, though the band continues to further their work.
