David Robert Jones, known as David Bowie, was an English singer-songwriter and actor. David Bowie grew up in Brixton, London, and refined a passion for the arts by studying music and design before commencing his professional career in the early 60's. He was in a slew of non-charting blues and rock acts such as the King Bees and Riot Squad before reinventing himself and releasing his own solo material. Bowie's 1967 debut 'David Bowie', a blend of psychedelia and pop, would fail to chart.
He explored his music in the early 70's, releasing 3 more albums before helping launching the glam-rock movement internationally with his androgynous alter-ego Ziggy Stardust. The 1972 release of 'The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars' and it's single 'Starman' bonded a growing Bowie to pop culture immediately, and international touring followed suit. Throughout the 1970's Bowie would experiment with his fluidity, releasing apprehensive soul-crossover album's such as 'Young Americans' and 'Station to Station', and the electronically rinsed 'Low', 'Heroes', and 'Lodger', all of which reached top 5 in the UK. The 1980's would bear an inconsistent string of number one singles: 'Ashes to Ashes', 'Let's Dance', and 'Under Pressure'. 'Let's Dance' defined Bowie's peak of international success and topped both the US and UK charts before he saw a slow decline throughout the 90's and 2000's. Throughout his career Bowie was also a steady actor, appearing in films such as 'Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence', 'Labyrinth', and 'The Prestige'. He is regarded as one of the most important and influential icons of 20th-century pop culture, and was awarded 14 total platinum certifications between the US and UK, having produced eleven number-one albums in total. Though ceasing to perform after 2004, he remained musically active until his death on January 10, 2016, 2 days after the release of his final album, 'Blackstar'.
