Walden Robert Cassoto was an American singer-songwriter, actor, and multi-instrumentalist professionally known as Bobby Darin.
Darin's music career first began when he was introduced to singer Connie Francis, whom he wrote many songs with. The couple developed a romantic affiliation that Francis' father was not fond of and the couple split, with Francis later noting not marrying Darin to be the 'biggest mistake of her life'. Darin signed with Atlantic Records subsidiary Atco Records and penned many songs for other artists before his own commercial breakthrough with the single 'Splish Splash' in 1958. The song was re-released as 'Early in the Morning' and charted at 24 in the US. The next year Darin wrote the multi-million selling ballad 'Dream Lover'. His next release, 'Mack The Knife', was a sway away from the typically over-saturated popular rock n' roll style at the time and involved itself with more jazz influences. Darin initially was opposed to releasing it as a single, but the song shot to number one and earned him a Grammy award for Record of the Year in 1960. Darin followed this success with several other chart toppers engaging a broad area of genre's before making his acting debut in 1962's 'Come September', a role for which he'd be awarded a Golden Globe. In the 60's Darin became involved with politics and worked actively with the Robert F. Kennedy presidential campaign, being present the night he was assassinated. This was the same year Darin discovered a disturbing secret about his family that would send him into isolation. Though making a comeback from this, Darin's declining health throughout his life from an early age sealed him into an early passing following heart surgery at the age of 37.
