Aretha Franklin is an American singer and songwriter from Memphis, Tennessee who is widely regarded as the 'Queen of Soul'.
Franklin grew up the daughter of Minister C.L. Franklin and actively sang gospel in church until the age of 18 when her career took a more secular curve. She first signed to Columbia Records in 1960 but had little success. Closer to the end of the decade, Franklin would find herself signed to Atlanta Records, where she first achieved international fame with songs such as 'Respect' and '(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman'. Throughout the 70's and 80's Franklin would over time become the most charted female artist in Billboard's history, with a record 112 charted singles. In 1998, she would gain international attention for replacing Luciano Pavarotti on singing the opera aria "Nessun dorma" at the Grammies that year. That same year would host her last charting top 40 single, 'A Rose Is Not A Rose'. In her career, Franklin has won 18 Grammy awards, been induced into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and GMA Gospel Music Hall of Fame, and has been ranked number one on Rolling Stone's Greatest Singers of All Time list.
